 Histroy of Pakistan :

Pakistan emerged after the partition of India in 1947 as a new country.

On August 14, 1947, the Muslim dominated provinces of British India — Sindh, Punjab, Bengal, Balochistan, and the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) — were merged into India, while the Indian province of Bengal, which was formerly with India, was merged into the Dominion .

According to the 1901 census, only 5 per cent of the population was Muslim.

Today, 90% of Pakistan's population is Muslim and only 3% is Christian.

In 1947, the Muslim League struggled to achieve independence for Pakistan, led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the leader of the Muslim community in British India and father of Pakistan.

The League managed to form a parliament (Constituent Assembly of Pakistan) of Muslim leaders, but the Hindu-majority Congress, led by Jawaharlal Nehru, refused to join the assembly.

As a result, the prime ministership was declared to be a temporary office until both communities could come to an agreement on a constitution.

The Constituent Assembly was convened in August 1947 and passed the Pakistan Constitution in November 1947.

In May 1948, the Constituent Assembly refused to appoint Jinnah to the office of prime minister, because he advocated non-violent methods for gaining independence.

Instead, the electorate chose the non-violent leader of the secular Indian National Congress, Jawaharlal Nehru as the first Prime Minister of Pakistan.

He was sworn in as prime minister of Pakistan on 26 July 1948.

On 7 August 1948, Pakistan held its first ever elections, and was eventually formed as a Muslim-majority country.

For the most part, Muslims are seen as the most oppressed community in Pakistan, who were denied their basic rights.

Religious minorities have been discriminated against by religious bigots.

In the modern history of Pakistan, these rights have been gradually eroded, particularly after the July 1977 "State of Emergency".

Nevertheless, there has been a gradual shift of Pakistan towards secularism and to a greater extent toward liberal democracy.
