Histroy of Pakistan : Pakistan emerged after the partition of India in 1947 as a new country. On August 14, 1947, the Muslim dominated provinces of British India — Sindh, Punjab, Bengal, Balochistan, and the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) — were merged into India, while the Indian province of Bengal, which was formerly with India, was merged into the Dominion . According to the 1901 census, only 5 per cent of the population was Muslim. Today, 90% of Pakistan's population is Muslim and only 3% is Christian. In 1947, the Muslim League struggled to achieve independence for Pakistan, led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the leader of the Muslim community in British India and father of Pakistan. The League managed to form a parliament (Constituent Assembly of Pakistan) of Muslim leaders, but the Hindu-majority Congress, led by Jawaharlal Nehru, refused to join the assembly.
