Bitcoin mining is also facing challenges from a lack of processing power and mining rigs on the market. Companies that make mining rigs have reduced the amount of bitcoin they mine because prices have dropped. Smithfield Financial, a Smithfield firm founded in 1936, was established with the intent of providing investment opportunities in the bitcoin industry. CEO George T. Hamrick said that while the bitcoin is still extremely volatile, its value keeps rising, something Hamrick attributes to the involvement of the public. 




"Over the last couple of months, I don't think that a private investor would have been able to gain that much exposure in bitcoin. So now when you buy bitcoin you're actually buying the entire market cap of bitcoin because it's now traded on so many exchanges," Hamrick said. The investment As with many investments, investors need to understand the risks. Hamrick noted that for every successful bitcoin investor, there are 10 unsuccessful ones.
